As the market for ecotourism flourishes in Costa Rica, new developments are looking to innovate and offer more options to the environmentally-friendly traveler. One such destination is Cacique, Costa Rica. With a whopping investment estimated at $800 million, this luxury resort located on the country’s northern Pacific coast and popular tourist region of Guanacaste is slated to open in phases starting in 2010. Backed by Revolution Places, AOL co-founder Steve Case’s latest venture, and a slew of partners including One&Only Resorts, Tom Doak, and Agassi/Graf Tennis and Fitness Center, this larger than life development hopes to redefine vacationing. Not only that, but by working closely with the Costa Rican government, Cacique may very well set a new standard for overseas commercial and resort development.

The New York Times published an article last fall describing this massive undertaking. The initial impression given is one that astounds environmentalists, diplomats, and vacationers alike. But one of the biggest challenges facing the developers is the innovation itself: tackling forty-percent lower energy consumption, effective reforestation and revegetation projects, and maintaining luxury accommodations at the same time.

In Costa Rica, declared a carbon-neutral country, the impact and success of such an endeavor is imperative to the outlook and growth of the commercial and real estate industries. Lucrative investments in an already competitive setting by other companies such as Starwood Hotels and Resorts, Regent Hotels and Resorts, and Rosewood Hotels and Resorts are feeling the pressure from Revolution Places. If Cacique proves to be triumphant in setting the standard for foreign investment and real estate development in Costa Rica, the bar will be set high for expectations in both environmental responsibility and the hospitality industry through the eyes of the rest of the world and its eco-minded inhabitants.
